Mike Williams Art
Growing up fishing and hunting South Carolina’s lakes, rivers, swamps, and flat-woods cultivated in me a great interest in nature. That appreciation for the environment and all its inhabitants is now greater and more important than ever as urban sprawl and land misuse constantly threaten to erase the remaining bogs, bays, and forests. Of particular interest to me, flooded timber and wetland terrain offer an ambiguous relationship between the wood, water, and air - creating a spatially complex and intriguing visual feast.
Working from memory, my landscape paintings interpret and translate this phenomenon through the constant exploration of color and mark-making.
My fish paintings and sculptures reflect figures of my imagination, my experiences as a fisherman, and my capabilities as an artist with a working knowledge of welding / metal-working, electrical wiring, and sign-painting.
